Outcome 4
Science Practical and Investigation Skills (J3RF 44)
Learners are required to plan, carry out and report on a laboratory based practical investigation.
In doing so they must:
- (a) Plan a scientific investigation to test a given scenario.
- (b) Carry out the scientific investigation in line with the plan.
- (c) Follow safe and hygienic practices throughout the scientific investigation.
- (d) Record results of the investigation in an appropriate format.
- (d) Draw valid conclusions based on the experimental results.
At SCQF level 4, learners will not be expected to identify the full project methodologies by themselves. Learners should be given broad guidance on approaches which could be taken, before planning the actual detail of the investigation by themselves. It is expected that the investigation could involve further development of the techniques covered in outcomes 1 and 2.
Learners may work individually or in small groups during the planning and practical phase of the investigation. However, learners must produce their own investigation report.
Assessors should complete a checklist for each learner:
Examples of suitable investigations are given below:
Biology
- Effect of household cleaners on the growth of bacteria.
- Response of woodlice to changing moisture and/or light conditions.
- Effect of fertiliser concentration on the growth of mustard seedlings.
Chemistry
- Factors affecting the rate of rusting.
- Calorific values of foodstuffs.
- The de-icing proficiency of different salts.
Physics
- Factors affecting resistance of a wire.
- Viscosities of liquids and effects of temperature.
- Factors affecting the motion of an object on a slope.
