Q1(e) (iii) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because ‘changing a manufacturing process’ and different types of finish are correct responses.

Q1(f) (i) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because ‘easily melted down’ and smooth and ‘shiny finish’ can be achieved are correct responses.

Q1(f) (ii) - The candidate was awarded 3 marks because ‘identical, complex shapes’ and ‘mass production’ are three correct responses.

Candidate 2  -  12/24

Q1(a) (i) - The candidate was awarded 0 marks because pine is a softwood.

Q1(a) (ii) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because ‘durable’ and easily sourced are correct responses.

Q1(c) (i) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because ‘highlights the grain’ and ‘preserve the wood’ are correct responses.

Q1(c) (ii) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because ‘sanded’ and ‘remove dust’ are correct responses.

Q1(d) (iii) - The candidate was awarded 1 mark because ‘easy to mould’ is correct.

Candidate 3  -  15/24

Q1(a) (i) - The candidate was awarded 1 mark because ‘oak’ is correct.

Q1(a) (ii) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because ‘strong and durable’ are correct responses.

Q1(b) - The candidate was awarded 1 mark because ‘lap joint’ is correct however ‘mortise and tenon’ is incorrect.

Q1(c) (i) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because ‘protects the wood and see the grain’ are correct responses.

Q1(c) (ii) - The candidate was awarded 1 mark because we accepted the ‘rub’ comment; ‘soak’ was not enough to gain the second mark. Non-specific use of the word ‘rub’ does not gain a mark.

Q1(d) (ii) - The candidate was awarded 0 marks because the response is incorrect.

Q1(d) (iii) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because ‘cheap’ and ‘remouldable’ are correct responses.

Q1(e) (i) - The candidate was awarded 1 mark because putting the tool in gains 1 mark.  It is accepted this is vague, but it is relevant and true.

Q1(e) (ii) - The candidate was awarded 1 mark because putting in the tool gains a mark here also, when reading with ‘slowly move the tool along’ the response gathers strength, however due to the vague and repetitive nature of the response from the previous question it was decided to award 1 mark maximum for this response.

Q1(e) (iii) - The candidate was awarded 1 mark because a fast speed leaves a smoother outcome is correct.

Q1(f) (i) - The candidate was awarded 2 marks because lightweight and look good are correct responses.

Q1(f) (ii) - The candidate was awarded 1 mark because very detailed is a correct response.  Looks good is not true as the component requires subsequent finishing in order to achieve a high quality of finish.  Precise is a repeat of detailed. 1 mark total.
