Marker's commentary:

The candidate was awarded 2 marks because:

  • In part (a) (i) Concerto was the correct answer and in part (b) (i) Minimalist was the correct answer.
  • In part (a) (ii) the candidate has correctly identified that there was a solo piano. To be awarded the mark however the candidate needed to identify that an orchestra was also featured in the excerpt. No mark was awarded.
  • In part (b) (ii) see marking instructions – a range of answers which imply repetition of either melody or rhythm are acceptable.

  • In part (a) (ii) the candidate has made no mention of a solo instrument or piano with orchestra. No mark was awarded.

The candidate was awarded 3 marks because:

  • Parts a (i), (b) (i) and (b) (ii) are correct.
  • In part (a) (ii) the candidate has correctly identified that there was an orchestra. However to be awarded the mark, the candidate had to identify that there was also a solo instrument.
