Marking Instruction
Task: E-mail application for a job in this country or abroad, including information specified in six bullet points.
Assessment process:
Candidates will write a piece of extended writing in the modern language by addressing six bullet points. These bullet points will follow on from a job-related scenario. The bullet points will cover the four contexts of society, learning, employability and culture to allow candidates to use and adapt learned material. The first four bullet points will be the same each year and the last two will change to suit the scenario. Candidates need to address these ‘unpredictable bullet points’ in detail to access the full range of marks.
With reference to Content, Accuracy and Language resource, assess the overall quality of the candidate’s response and allocate it to a pegged mark. It is important to assess how candidates have addressed bullet points and detail in relation to this as highlighted in bold in Content.

This piece of evidence exemplifies a script awarded 8 marks for the Writing element of this Course Assessment component.
Candidates were required to respond to a job advert by addressing four predictable bullet points and two unpredictable bullet points.
The candidate was awarded 8 marks for the following reasons:
Paragraph 1
- An attempt was made, albeit unsuccessfully, to begin the response appropriately and refer to the job advert
- The candidate omitted the verb (cur) which was crucial to success and accuracy of the sentence
- Accurate use of a more complex prepositional pronoun (thugaibh)
Paragraph 2
- The candidate attempted “S e” construction but used the incorrect prepositional pronoun
- Age and home town written correctly
Paragraph 3
- Candidate used basic structure to address the second bullet point. There is, however, insufficient detail at this level
Paragraph 4
- Candidate used a more complex connective correctly (gu bheil). This sentence was also extended using “agus” but the accuracy was not sustained in the final part of the sentence
Paragraph 5
- Candidate correctly used the past tense of the verb ‘to be’ but the accuracy was not sustained in the final part of the sentence
- The second sentence in this paragraph contains significant grammatical errors
Paragraph 6
- The candidate attempts to address the first unpredictable bullet point. Accurate use of two prepositional pronouns (leam and agam). The first sentence is mainly accurate and contains a connective (agus)
- There are, however, significant errors in the second sentence
Paragraph 7
- Candidate addressed the second unpredictable bullet point
- There are significant grammatical errors
Page 2
- The candidate attempted to finish the response appropriately
- Grammatical error: deagh dùrachd
