English Intermediate 1

Conditions and Arrangements

Course Outline

The Intermediate 1 English Course articulates with and provides progression from both the Standard Grade English Course and the Access 3 English Course. It also provides those who wish to proceed to Intermediate 2 and Higher English with a suitable basis for further study.

External Examination

The external examination lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes. There are two papers.

Close Reading (1 hour) 50% weighting

Critical Essay (45 minutes) 50% weighting.

Close Reading

In response to a series of questions, candidates will be required to demonstrate their ability to understand, analyse and evaluate a passage of unseen prose non-fiction.

Critical Essay

In response to one question from a range of questions, candidates will be required to write a Critical Essay demonstrating their ability to understand, analyse and evaluate previously studied poetry, prose, drama, mass media or language texts.

The grade awarded will be based on the total score obtained in the examination.
